Classified Ads: Do they work? Is it worth the effort?

In the previous chapter,  we examined the pros and cons of FFA pages both for hosting and posting. Now, we will delve into the depths of Classified Advertising.

Let's start by examining the differences between FFA and classifieds. They are significant, these are really two entirely different media:

1. Classified Ads do not usually roll off after a few minutes or hours. They are usually of a specific duration, so you know when you need to repost. Some ads can last as long as 60 days before you have to repost.  FFAs on the other hand,  are a crap-shoot. You never know how long your ad will last! More often than not, it has rolled off the page within an hour. Because of autoposting, it is not the number of people viewing that causes the ad to roll but the massive numbers of postings, most of which are never even seen by human eyes!!!

2. You normally get a better chance to  grab your prospect's attention and more space to impart your information. Often, you can include sound, graphics, flash promos or even video!

3. People actually use the classifieds (or some of them at least) to actually look for products and services!

4. You can better target your prospects because there are  usually more than half a dozen categories.

The downside - (there always is one):

1. Posting takes considerably more time. You can't just throw together a one-liner and throw it up.

2. Many (perhaps even most) of the best sites charge a fee. Yahoo classifieds are still free of charge, but this may well change in the near future. The fact that paid classifieds are still surviving and even thriving suggests that they must be working! Remember, if FREE advertising were the best medium, no-one would be using the paid sites. (We hope you are getting the message that FREE can be a mixed blessing!)

3. There is no consistent interface so posting to multiple sites can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience.

4. It is still an uncertain venture and unless you have good ad-tracking software, you will have to sift through tons of rock before you find your first diamond!

Don't despair! Help is at hand! As with most other topics, if you know where to get the help, your life can be made much easier.

First let's look at some of the software solutions:

1. Worldsubmitter: This site includes some of the largest Classified networks in its submission lists. If you use the pro version you can preselect which ones you want to post to. Overall, this is the best FREE submission site on the Internet!

2. Powersubmitter: Undoubtedly the best automatic submitter on the market. It's not free but it won't break the bank either. It has way too many features to explain them all here. You will be able to submit up to 15 urls or ads to thousands of classified sites with the touch of a key. The program automatically updates itself and its database of sites! Once set up properly, it will make classifieds almost as easy as FFAs

3. There are various 'free' programs available for download all over the Internet. Just use your favorite search engine and find them. Most offer pared-down versions as come-ons or are really advertising vehicles for their producers. We've included links to a couple on the resources page (left column). If you use Powersubmitter and Worldsubmitter, you won't need them.

Some individual sites (networks) that you might want to submit to:

AdLandPro: One of the best-known networks and a possible lead generator and moneymaker into the bargain. We have been a member of this organization for some time now and highly recommend their newsletter which is really more of a discussion forum for on-line marketers.

I-Sell Network: We host one of these pages ourselves, and when
you post to our page, you have the option of broadcasting your
ad to the entire network of several hundred sites (free) for up
to sixty days.

Links2U: This calls itself a 'directory' but it falls into the classified category in our view. Either way, it is high traffic and will give good exposure if you work their system.

Of course, the most important aspect of classified advertising is to have a good ad. This will be the main difference between a campaign that works and one that doesn't. It is beyond the scope of this book to teach you how to write an effective classified ad. We do however have some options for you that will certainly help. If you decide to use Powersubmitter, send us an   E-mail and let us know what programs you are participating in and promoting and we will send you our Powersubmitter files with ready made ads. If you would like to develop your own ads, we have included two FREE downloads that will teach you all you need to know.

Pro Secret: Most Classified ads are keyed  on the Headline or E-mail address. By changing each of these, you can post multiple ads on the same site and test several ads at once.

Pro Secret: Don't waste time reinventing the Wheel. You don't have to do everything from scratch yourself, when others have already beaten the path. go to classified sites and copy the ads that you find work the best. Now, modify them to suit your own product or service. Don't copy word for word, but create a 'swipe' file of the best words, phrases and headlines and use these to generate your ads.
